How FEV Tutor Connects Online Tutoring with NWEA MAP Growth

Overview:

Our empirical data shows that our most successful tutoring programs, that drive the largest student achievement gains, are those in which our tutors are able to closely connect 1:1 instruction to the student's core classroom. There are several ways to align 1:1 tutoring with core instructional strategies, but the most direct and effective method is to collect existing district/school benchmark assessment data. In fact, FEV Tutor recently formed a partnership with NWEA to make data sharing even easier for our partner school and districts.

Why NWEA?

We approached NWEA about a partnership after observing that many of our school partners already utilize NWEA MAP Growth™ assessments to inform instruction. MAP Growth provides the most precise measure of a K-12 student’s academic achievement and growth. A computer-adaptive assessment, it adjusts to each student’s responses to provide personalized results about what each student knows, is able to do, and is ready to learn next—whether on, above, or below grade level. MAP Growth is currently used by more than 11 million students at over 9,500 schools and districts within the U.S. and internationally.

We've found that analyzing MAP Growth RIT scores is an effective way for FEV to create highly-targeted Personalized Tutoring Plans. Through our partnership with NWEA, FEV Tutor can quickly access MAP Growth reports to differentiate instruction, pinpoint individual student needs, and measure individual growth over time.

The Process:

To connect FEV's tutoring services to MAP Growth our Education Team collaborates closely with your school and district leaders to analyze students RIT Scores/Grade-Level Equivalencies (GLEs), suggested focus areas, and Growth Goals to create data-driven tutoring plans that are individualized for each student and tied to measured outcomes.

1. Identify Target Students

First, we review the most recent seasonal MAP Growth assessment data to identify cohorts of students who would benefit most from 1:1 tutoring support.

2. Inform Personalized Tutoring Plans

We then analyze individual student results to develop a Personalized Tutoring Plan and Growth Goals. Common data points for analysis, include:

  • RIT Scores - Grade Level Equivalency (GLE)
  • Target Subject(s) - Math, Reading, or Other
  • Focus Areas
  • Projected Growth

Finally, we track Fall to Winter to Spring MAP growth to measure student growth against individual student goals and FEV Tutor's key performance indicators.

Sample MAP Growth Gains

The school saw statistically significant gains in Fall to Winter and Fall to Spring for FEV Participants in both Math and Reading.

Students who met with their online tutors for 21-25 sessions (1-2 sessions per week) saw the most improvement with 80% of students meeting or exceeding their MAP Growth goals from Fall to Spring. Only 47% of students who did not use FEV Tutor went on to meet their MAP Growth goals.
