3 Reasons to Utilize High-Impact Math Tutoring as an Intervention

High-impact tutoring in mathematics can produce large learning gains for most students, including those who have fallen below grade level and need the greatest academic support. This includes students who participate in Response to Intervention Tier 2 or Tier 3 interventions, which represent approximately 20% of math students who need selective support or specific intervention and a support plan. These students benefit from math tutoring programs, as demonstrated by higher scores on national math assessments.

Because of the improved learning outcomes that come from high-impact tutoring, there is value in allowing schools to supplement their existing math programs with a rigorous tutoring programs. Here are three reasons to utilize high-impact math tutoring as an intervention:

1. Addresses the Needs of Struggling Students

Response to Intervention (RTI) is an example of a multi-tiered system of support, in which struggling students receive increasingly more intensive levels of instruction. FEV Tutor is a research- and evidence-based intervention, and we work with districts to customize their high-impact tutoring solution to accelerate learning—particularly with RTI students. In a study, researchers found that RTI Tier 2 and Tier 3 support through FEV’s online math tutoring contributed to statistically significant gains in student assessment scores.

2. Greater Effectiveness

Research reveals that tutoring conducted during school hours tends to have more significant impacts than tutoring conducted after school and is therefore more effective. One of FEV Tutor’s own studies with NWEA Math data corroborates these findings. In our study, students who received onsite tutoring had a 2.78 higher average F-S RIT Growth score than students who received at-home tutoring––a significant difference when it comes to student learning gains.

3. Improved Later Learning Success

Evidence suggests that ensuring math competence is essential to students’ later learning success. Early math instruction is critical: Learning math builds upon previous knowledge, so early deficits can hold learners back. Early intervention in math can repair deficits and prevent future deficits by providing students with a foundational knowledge of mathematical concepts that will support them through their later learning.

FEV Tutor provides the industry’s most comprehensive virtual tutoring solution to help those students with the greatest needs by aligning its tutoring to the standards, curriculum, goals, and initiatives of each school and district to accelerate learning. The result is a profoundly effective, targeted tutoring program that represents a natural extension of the student’s core classroom.
